So, from time to time I like to introduce lovely new music to my friends, now, I understand if you know me I’ve probably introduced you to Common, weather or not you asked for a formal introduction or not. However, this week I have been taking time to get to know his new release “Universal Mind Control” a little better, I’ve been familiar with the album since it dropped, however I wanted to become acquainted with this release, biblical style. In previous posts and vlogs I have been singing the hallelujah praises of Lonnie Rashid Lynn, Jr.’s unapologetic new record, and while nothing has changed, upon a further listen on Universal Mind Control, my mind has been completely blown open.

On the third track of the album, “Make My Day,” Cee-Lo lends both his recognizable vocals and his producing experience, in the background the ATL based producer tickles the ivory keys in a style that is quintessentially Cee-Lo wile crooning along side Common’s silk worm spun lyrical styling. Cee-lo brings a nasty, yet totally refined, southern charm to the track.

Stunning in everyway possible.....

My absolute favorite track on the album is the sublimely sexy track “Everywhere,” the first listen of this track transported me to a wonderland where sexy smoke slithered through my ears and immediately set my hips swaying and my fingers snapping to the intoxicating beat. Common paired with British singer-songwriter Martina Topely-Bird. As I started researching Martina I became fascinated with her siren like vocals, and her enormous on stage presence. “Everywhere” leaves me feeling euphoric, and is by far my absolute favorite track on the inspired album.

Everywhere Lyrics:

Chorus:
How did you know I’ve been waiting for this time to come
And though it tastes like forever
it may not stay long
Everywhere is summer (x4)

A shaman since before my birth
And I came down to rock the Earth
My mission condition
I give you you listen
I’m syncing in time in parallel
In binary no 3rd return
I’m planning intention
With all the redemption

Chorus
How did you know I’ve been waiting for this time to come
And though it tastes like forever
it may not stay long
Everywhere is summer (x4)

Common
No pop no pop no pop no pop
We gon do this thang till the sky just drop
Lock in to ya mind away we rock
In a rocket is the 87th astronaut
Top of the soul dove and I got in a hole
At the moment they were sayin
It was outta control
Strap in to your mind
Rhyme season with climb
Youll see in time your season to shine
When the stadium is dark
MCs are defined
Get ready, on your mark put your feet on the line
The race is on to space beyond
You gon get there by doin what you want
Sometimes the most famous feel all alone
So we drift to a place that we call our home
I was known as being spaced and outta my dome
now I know its all Ive known

Chorus
How did you know I’ve been waiting for this time to come
And though it tastes like forever
it may not stay long
Everywhere is summer (x4)

Aren't her freckles divine.

Aren't her freckles divine?

I worry about Common becoming over produced, but its absolutely clear to me that Common is growing in all directions at once, while old school Common is amazing, the artist he is growing into simply boggles my mind, with every album I am stimulated, I am challenged and I am beyond entertained. You know I’m right, check it out.
